Juan Marín
Entre negocios dedicados a la electrónica, a la explotación de inmigrantes latinoamericanos, a la bisutería de origen chino, a la falsificación de perfumes caros y a otros rentables y florecientes emprendimientos, en plena era digital todavía subsisten, respiran, navegan, no se sabe cómo, las tiendas de libros usados ubicadas en las primeras cuadras de calle San Diego, tradicionales sitios donde aún es posible buscar/explorar, en sus atiborradas estanterías, algún texto de segunda mano que nos llame la atención. Fue, precisamente, en una de estas tiendas donde días atrás me encontré con una edición de Cuarto Propio -fechada en 2014- que rescata la producción de un poeta para mí hasta entonces desconocido. Se trata del también narrador, diplomático, aviador, cirujano y médico militar Juan Marín (Talca, 1900; Viña del Mar, 1963), polifacético personaje de la cada vez más lejana primera mitad del siglo pasado cuyos versos, gracias a los oficios de Francisco Martinovich y Cristóbal Gómez, coeditores de “Juan Marín. Obra poética”, dan un salto en el tiempo y se instalan en pleno siglo XXI.
Como argumento para reeditar a Juan Marín, en el prólogo Martinovic señala que su poesía -ampliamente relegada en relación a su reconocida obra narrativa- le parece “una escritura interesante y destacable dentro del contexto de la vanguardia chilena”, haciéndonos saber, más adelante, que Naín Nómez incluye textos del autor en su mamotrética antología de la poesía chilena de todos los tiempos, intentando así reforzar la idea de lo conveniente de republicar la obra del talquino. Aun sabiendo que los prólogos son tan poco confiables como la publicidad de hamburguesas o las bienaventuranzas de un banquero, compré el libro, tenía curiosidad, y poseído por un entusiasmo bastante moderno, bastante antiguo, apenas salí de la librería me encaminé a un restaurante barato y pedí un café lo más cargado posible, pues andaba medio dormido, medio ido. En una butaca carreteada, debajo de un afiche de una marca de cigarrillos que ya no existe, bebiendo la negra y aromática droga elaborada por Nestlé, abrí el texto y me dispuse a leer. De lo primero que me enteré es que la publicación fue financiada por el Fondo del Libro y la Lectura, es decir, que cabe dentro de la fiebre de exhumaciones literarias que se vive hoy en día gracias a los fondos estatales (fiebre que nos llevará, pronto, a publicar hasta la tos -rítmica o no- de fantasmales escritores de antaño). En segundo lugar, supe que en vida Marín publicó dos poemarios: “Looping” (Nascimento, 1929) y “Aquarium” (Julio Walton Editor, 1934), obras que, junto a sus poemas dispersos, reúne la publicación de Cuarto Propio.
Tras la lectura del libro -dos tazas de café más tarde-mi entusiasmo ya no era el mismo, había decaído a pesar del consumo de la oscura droga proveniente de Vevey, Suiza, pues me encontré, especialmente en “Looping”, que es el plato fuerte del libro, con una obra absolutamente influida por los movimientos de vanguardia de principios de siglo, particularmente por el futurismo y el cubismo, sin que se observasen aportes o giros relevantes del autor a tales estéticas, hallándose además ciertos resabios líricos entre sus versos. No se trata, ni por lejos, me dije, de la obra de un Pablo de Rokha, un Vicente Huidobro o un Oliverio Girondo, por nombrar a algunos autores latinoamericanos influidos por las vanguardias que lograron construir un estilo propio. No, la poesía de Marín, escrita en verso libre y situada por lo general en la bohemia de ciudades como París, Nueva York o Buenos Aires, se queda en la superficie, no vuela a pesar de hallarse plagada de aviones, motores, electricidad, acero y movimiento.
Tan poco original resulta la poesía de Marín que, al momento de escribir este artículo, bebiendo café ahora en casa, drogándome con Nestlé ahora en casa, me encontré con una cita de Louis Parrot -biógrafo de Blaise Cendrars- acerca del autor europeo que podría aplicarse casi perfectamente a la poesía del talquino: “El cubismo, el arte negro, el jazz, la publicidad y el afiche, la vida ardiente de las grandes ciudades, el maquinismo, la velocidad, los bares, el gusto cosmopolita por los viajes. Todo ese material nuevo, todavía inexplorado, ofrecido a los jóvenes de entonces, Blaise Cendrars lo integra a la poesía (…) él transcribe la epopeya del mundo de hoy”. La extensa cita de Parrot, como señalé recién, se puede aplicar “casi” perfectamente a la poesía de Juan Marín. Casi, porque lo de Marín, obviamente, no es “material nuevo” ni tampoco su escritura “transcribe la epopeya del mundo” de ese entonces. Le hace falta, para aquello, la existencia de un ser humano como hablante poético, puesto que Marín escribe de forma despersonalizada, sin profundidad ni arraigo, por lo que su poesía más que una epopeya es más bien una jugarreta, “un ensueño de Nafta y Mobiloil”, como escribe en el poema “Looping”, hallándose desvinculado de las profundas razones estéticas, vitales, sociales, que el autor del gran poema “Prosa del Transiberiano” tuvo para desarrollar su obra.

Y aquí eso no sucede. La poesía de Juan Marín es más bien una anécdota. Una anécdota exhumada en nombre de la sagrada memoria y los fondos estatales. Sus vuelos en aeroplano son de fantasía, sus loopings son de eventos familiares tipo Feria del Aire. La cosa, en una época en que la fe en el positivismo y el desarrollo tecnológico mostraban ya sus primeras grietas, iba para otra parte. Bien lo supo Vicente Huidobro, que en vez de jugar a quemar gasolina dando volteretas en la litosfera, en 1931, dos años después de la aparición de “Looping”, publicó su gran poema “Altazor”, donde abdica del avión, del motor, de la gasolina, y en paracaídas se arroja al aterrador vacío del lenguaje.
