Vicente Huidobro -se sabe- nació en una familia adinerada. Su padre era heredero del marquesado de Casa Real, además de tener negocios vinculados a la banca y participar de la vida política nacional (otro buen negocio), en tanto su abuelo fue el dueño de la viña Santa Rita. En estas condiciones, ciertamente no tuvo grandes problemas financieros para iniciar su aventura europea y ligarse a las vanguardias de la época, donde se vincularía a artistas como Picasso, Apollinaire, Cendrars y otros pesos pesados.
Hubo un tiempo, eso sí, en que el autor de Altazor supo lo que es la falta de dinero. Ocurrió a comienzos de los años treinta, en el contexto de la Gran Depresión -surgida en EEUU en 1929- que afectó prácticamente a todos los países del orbe, incluyendo a Chile y las naciones europeas. En este contexto, Huidobro sufrió la falta de remesas familiares desde Chile, teniendo que ingeniárselas para sobrevivir. Algunas de las complicaciones vividas por el poeta durante esos años quedaron registradas en las cartas que le enviase a su madre, María Luisa Fernández, desde París entre los años 1930 y 1932, un año antes de retornar a Chile a causa de la inestabilidad económica generalizada.
Podemos conocer, en las cartas, la experiencia y las reflexiones del poeta respecto de la crisis en Europa, donde ve “nubes de mendigos” y “caras de hambre que dan miedo”. Relata, también, las penurias de los artistas de la época, contándole a su madre cómo en una fastuosa inauguración de Picasso, con bar y buffet, muchos de ellos “que tal vez no comían algo sólido desde meses, se llenaron por una semana.” Las cartas dejan ver, además, la vertiente comercial de Huidobro, que se dedica a mercadear vino y frutas en el viejo continente con el fin de generar recursos. Consciente del poder de las palabras, logra vender una gran partida de manzanas cambiándole el nombre a una variedad que ya había sido rechazada. Surgen, también, aspectos íntimos vinculados a la vergüenza que el poeta siente de ser un mantenido: “Yo recibo dinero de Uds. y el recibirlo me duele lo que Ud. no se imagina, a pesar de que sé que Uds. a su vez lo recibieron de sus padres y que todo el mundo más o menos está en el mismo caso, sin embargo no puedo impedirme un sentimiento de humillación”.
Las cartas de Huidobro a su madre no se quedan solamente en los problemas económicos, dado que consignan también, aunque en menor medida, otras preocupaciones que el autor, fallecido en 1948, tenía por ese tiempo: la educación chilena y la educación de sus hijos (tema que aborda de forma bastante clasista), el devenir de los artistas de vanguardia, el sentido de la poesía, así como el destino de su aristocrática familia ante los cambios sociales de la época, llegando a plantearles, incluso, la posibilidad de irse a Angola a “esperar que pase el Diluvio”, es decir, la instalación del movimiento por la igualdad en el mundo, fenómeno que el autor de Ecuatorial -espécimen inusual en el que se mezclaban ideas aristócratas, comunistas y antifascistas- veía como algo necesario e imparable.
Se presentan, a continuación, fragmentos escogidos de las citadas cartas, los que fueron tomados del libro: “Vicente Huidobro, María Luisa Fernández, Epistolario 1924-1945”, publicado por DIBAM – LOM en 1997, con edición a cargo de Pedro Pablo Zegers y Thomas Harris. Este libro, de bella presentación, contiene además las cartas que el poeta le dirigiese a su hija Manuela, al escritor Salvador Reyes, al pintor Luis Vargas Rosas, así como las epístolas que la madre del poeta le enviase al mismo Huidobro.

Veo con delicia acercarse el movimiento de la igualdad en el Mundo. Lo único que me perturba es pensar en lo que sufrirían Uds. y lo que pudiera pasarles en los años de lucha y de trastorno que se nos vienen ya encima. Para qué quiere que le hable de mí y de mi salud. Eso no tiene importancia. ¿Qué importancia puede tener un hombre hoy que por primera vez en la historia se plantea sobre el tapete del Mundo el problema del hombre? ¡Es que están ciegos Uds. allá en América o están sordos? ¡Qué le importa mi salud al mundo cuando se trata de la salud de todos los hombres! ¿No sienten Uds. la espantosa borrasca que se prepara? Tal vez es mejor así. No sienten nada, duermen en paz, por lo menos el tiempo que aún puedan dormir. (27 de noviembre, 1930)

Preguntarme si existen para mí es algo absurdo. Se ve que no ha recibido mis cartas. Tanto viven para mí, tanto existen, que solo pienso en el modo de salvarlos y porque sé las cosas que ustedes no saben es que trato de esconderlos en un rincón del Mundo en donde puedan esperar que pase el Diluvio. ¿Comprende ahora? Comprende por qué les hablo en tres o cuatro cartas de Angola. Ofelia, el Mundo se pone negro, Ofelia vete a un convento. Mami, váyanse todos a Angola o a una isla perdida en el Pacifico. Pronto, pronto, mañana será tarde. (27 de noviembre, 1930)

¿Cómo yo voy a tener respeto por hijos míos educados en Chile?
Lo único que me duele es la educación de mis hijos allá y no en Europa. ¿Por qué? Porque yo mismo no puedo tener ningún respeto y ninguna esperanza por gente educada en la araucanía, así sean mis hijos. Forzosamente tendré que sentirlos inferiores, aunque no quiera, tendré que hablar con ellos como se habla con gente de otra raza, por mitades, como ellos hablarían con el hijo de la llavera que se educó en el liceo de Chimbarongo. Esto es forzoso y no esa culpa ni mía ni de ellos. Y lo que es peor ya no tiene remedio, ni es tiempo de cambiarlo. Pero yo tendré otros hijos y esos se educarán aquí, pase lo que pase, se educarán aquí. Un padre debe tener cierto respeto por sus hijos, esto es esencial para el cariño. ¿Cómo yo voy a tener respeto por hijos míos educados en Chile? Ud. comprenderá que esto es imposible. Podre quererlos, claro está, maternalmente como un león quiere a sus cachorros, pero con un pero, eternamente con el pero de no concederles ninguna beligerancia espiritual, de sentirlos en un plano inferior. Tendrían que ser enormes genios, y esos no se dan todos los días, para cambiar su situación. (27 de noviembre, 1930)

El entierro de Marie Blanchard
Vengo llegando del entierro de la pobre Marie Blanchard que tanto quería a todos los míos y que tenía un talento y un alma extras en un cuerpo tan poco favorecido. Fue un entierro tristísimo, como de drama romántico, aunque estaba todo lo mejor de París, pues llovía terriblemente y granizaba con un viento que azotaba la cara. Lipchitz, que iba a mi lado, lloraba como un niño y Picasso me decía: “cómo va disminuyendo nuestro grupo, nuestro primer grupo batallador y heroico, cuan pocos quedamos ya y en tan pocos años, tantos muertos: Apollinaire, Juan Gris, Modigliani, Pascin, Radiguet, Satie, Bell y ahora la pobre María”. A lo mejor resulta que el próximo soy yo pues fui al entierro bastante agripado y estoy con un poco de escalofríos. De aquí me voy a la cama. (7 de abril, 1932)

Diligencias que hubo que hacer para retirar del secuestro cinco libros míos
Con 1.800 pesetas de mi tío Ismael y las 500 que me prestó Pablo de Rivera tuve que pagar: mes y medio de estadía en Madrid al abogado que me representó como acreedor de la Ciap, varias escrituras judiciales, varias diligencias que hubo que hacer para retirar del secuestro cinco libros míos manuscritos -de suma importancia para mí- y luego viaje de regreso a París. No olvidando Ud. que la peseta ha caído y que nadie la quiere en el extranjero, comprenderá la razón de mis apuros. (1 de mayo, 1932)

Tanto pienso en verla y tantas ganas tengo que últimamente a un grupo de jóvenes y amigos míos que me pedían que yo fuera director de una revista que piensan sacar, les dije que si aceptaba sólo aceptaría por dos o tres meses pues pienso partir a América muy pronto. Y era un asunto que a mí me convenia porque aunque no me pagaban sueldo, esa revista meterá bulla y me serviría aunque sólo sea para poder decir muchas cosas que quiero decir y que hay que decir. No me pagarán sueldo porque me dan un tanto por ciento, es decir sueldo ficticio, pues ninguna revista aquí gana antes de uno o dos años de existencia. (1 de mayo, 1932)

Pomme-ananas
Alberto Zavala el representante de la compañía frutera chilena en Europa está haciendo gran negocio, vendiendo frutas chilenas de un modo increíble, es un hombre de esfuerzo y gran mérito. Me dijo que conocía mucho a Adolfo Mujica. Véndale a su compañía los frutos de sus campos, (frutos, tomates, cebollas, lentejas y sobre todo piñones que yo lanzaría fácilmente aquí en el mercado y que aquí nadie conoce pero que gustarían muchísimo). Llegaron 30.000 cajones de manzanas Huidobro y no se vendían pues los compradores encontraban muy raro el tal nombre y no catalogado en ningún libro de manzanas. Entonces yo tuve una pequeña inspiración y les dije que le cambiaran el nombre y como esa manzana tiene gusto a piña le pusieran pomme-ananas. Así lo hicieron, mandaron hacer 50.000 etiquetas con ese nombre y…milagro…se vendieron en tres días 21.000 cajas. De ahí viene mi amistad con Zavala, que además es un hombre excelente y activo como no hay dos. (6 de mayo, 1932)

Créame, mamacita mía, que hay que poner la oreja en la tierra como los indios y oír el mundo, oír el pulso que late en las entrañas de la tierra. Cierto es que los ricos no ven nada ni oyen nada. No recuerdo qué poeta o pensador antiguo dijo que todos vemos el mundo a través de un vidrio que agranda o empequeñece las cosas y que solo los ricos no ven el mundo porque han puesto una capa de plata dentro del vidrio y entonces el vidrio se les ha convertido en un espejo y solo se ven ellos mismos. Así es. Uds. no ven ni oyen nada porque no quieren ver ni oír nada, se tapan los ojos y los oídos. Es una solución de avestruz a todos los problemas y es el resultado del egoísmo. (6 de mayo, 1932)

Me parece que yo debía ir en viaje para Chile o estar allá desde hace algunos días. Hablé y no me oyeron, llamé y no me respondieron, anuncié y no me creyeron. Si yo hubiera tenido aquí un pequeño depósito de dinero o si me hubieran mandado el vino o si el vino viniera en viaje, yo habría podido solucionar esto y tomaría el primer vapor. Pero hablé y no me oyeron, etc., etc. El banco italiano me dio mil francos, en cambio el Anglo dice no haber recibido ni un céntimo para mí. Para qué entenderse con ese banco idiota y mal organizado. Ellos no tienen derecho a no cumplir inmediatamente las órdenes de sus clientes. Aquí estamos, pues, sin un céntimo, como todos mis compatriotas inteligentes, porque con esos mil francos tuve que pagar la casa. Apenas pueda me mudo de aquí. Sin embargo puede seguirme escribiendo a la misma dirección pues me mandarán las cartas a donde yo esté. (10 de junio 1932)

Una hacienda en Angola
Ahora mismo recibo carta de Angola, de los amigos que por mis consejos compraron una hacienda en Angola. Están felices, dicen que eso es el paraíso en la tierra, que sus campos de trigo son una maravilla, que el maíz es estupendo, que hay cacería para hartarse de todo lo mejor. Los otros amigos los que compraron hacienda en Larache también están muy contentos, pero encuentran que el África española está demasiado cerca de Europa y que ya empiezan a ir muchos turistas por esos lados. Sin embargo me abrazan en cada frase y se sienten felices en medio de la paz, lejos del mundanal ruido. (10 de junio 1932)

A veces creo haber llegado, a fuerza de meditar, a poder discernir en cada acto de mi vida a que línea de mis ancestros pertenece. Somos un complejo de fuerzas tan diversas, acaso aún de razas opuestas. Vaya Ud. a saber. Sólo hay una cosa cierta y es que la poesía es un consuelo y un refugio.
