Los dolores se suceden y se repiten en Pompeya con una monotonía abisal.
Te diré que llegar aquí es difícil, hay una suerte de tiranía en el acceso. No sé cómo lo hice, las coordenadas cardinales y geográficas no las sé, pero sé el camino, cómo me conduje aquí. Llegas a una especie de avenida, y a la gente de ese lugar le fluye algo por los ojos que no logro definir.
Lo que fluye no es una luz blanca, ni fluye un alma fuera en esos ojos: si al menos fuera un esbozo de sonrisa, no me daría ahora escalofríos el pasto que se quema en los inviernos, aquí.
La verdad de lo que fluye en este lugar es más bien la imagen de una boca, una boca desdentada que te besa, te da terror y te sostiene.

¿Por qué los ancianos y los enfermos son una carga hoy para nosotros? Algo que no nos interesa, que no es asunto nuestro.
Los niños son también una dificultad, pero de otra factura, ya que sabemos que son la carne fresca que llevará nuestro pasado marcado a fuego en la memoria.

En esta casa hay algo simétrico, algo pendular: si te mueves un poco hacia la izquierda, alguien se mueve a la derecha.
Es algo inconsciente, sabes, casi un reflejo. Somos enfermos, claro: estamos imposibilitados de recordar nuestro origen con claridad, y lo que queda como residuo es dejarse llevar por este espacio, y de múltiples maneras cumplir con los horarios.
Yo, por mi parte, tengo la noción de que recordando tendré un poco de sanía, pero recordar siempre ha sido decir la verdad, y no creo que seamos capaces de nombrarla. Si tan sólo esta gente, estos extraños cantaran, pero no, sólo miramos el vacío.

Sólo tenemos aquí la parodia del amor, la parodia de ese caos tan deseado, de esa angustia feliz, como un universo en su plenitud, que nos lleva a un frenesí anclado a un orden.
Pero basta, basta de todo esto. Estoy lejos de toda armonía, de toda serenidad aquí en Pompeya. Siempre vuelvo los ojos en torno mío, y he sentido ahora una monstruosa, una indescifrable apariencia, rodeada, sitiada por otras apariencias, tan incomprensibles: todo tan feroz, tan desgraciado, quizá como yo misma.

Hoy he almorzado en la cama, y siento frío y miedo. Es mediodía, y me doy cuenta por primera vez que todo está como tirado en esta habitación. Siento la angustia de quien ha sido olvidada, borrada de los lugares familiares, pero entiendo este lugar: en el sentido más profundo, no petrifica.
He sonreído por esto, pero no sé con quién hablar aquí. Por lo cual hablo sola, arañando una sombra.
El tiempo sucede, y por días yo rezo unos versos que he leído: en este lugar sólo parecen balbuceos.
Oh, Dios, compadécete ya.

A la manera de Antonin Artaud, soy una imbécil, porque mi pensamiento es estrecho y corto: mi pensamiento no sucede.
Acá hay horarios de visita. Se rompe la monotonía, pero en la casa no sabemos si esta ruptura es algo positivo o negativo. Por ejemplo, me visitan chicos de alguna comunidad cristiana que sólo tienen una imposición de venir, por compasión a la casa de reposo. Pero yo entrego una imposición con respecto a mi pensamiento, por lo cual, sólo alcanzan a ver una especie de espejismo. Y frente a eso, se ponen a pensar en esta imposición, como si todo esto significara la señal de una experiencia privilegiada aquí.
Mi yo se desgaja como un panecillo en la mesa donde ellos comen. ¿Habrán pensado alguna vez por qué no bebo agua en esta mesa?
No estoy triste, no se confundan: yo soy una imbécil y mala fama me encarcela.
Pero pasa que ustedes perciben no sé qué debilidad, no sé qué amorfía en esta aseveración. Debilidad mi ansia de concordancia, mi hipócrita necesidad de ustedes, cuando les represento la angustia y corro a pedirles piedad por las calles.

Yo, que hablaba de zapatos frente a ellos, para que ocuparan la palabra privilegio como una prostituta o una verdulera que diera un juicio sobre la realidad, ya que ellos ocupan todo su quehacer verbal para no salir nunca del círculo del verbo.
En esto percibo una sombría sombra que avanza. Me agobian, tanto como yo los agobio a ellos.
Pero me pregunto: ¿qué ven cuando me ven?
¿Ven acaso el desequilibrio, este aplanamiento, estas ausencias, este hundimiento en la realidad? Me pregunto:
¿Qué ven cuando me ven?
IV
A un costado de la casa hay un comedor junto a una higuera, pero hay otra manera de percibir el carácter de esta casa, porque hay un vacío que lo llena todo. A los ojos de otros soy una enferma entre enfermos; a mi vista soy un monstruo entre otros monstruos.
Pero, ¿qué es lo que hace que alguien sea monstruoso? Ya que aquí no hay destino, no hay causa: más bien, hay infinitas causas que insertan mi llegada a este lugar, para darme cuenta del cambio de mi naturaleza.
¿Cómo es que se puede vivir en este lugar? La clave es que perdemos la intimidad. No hay límites determinados entre nosotros. Somos seres invasores, culpables, peligrosos.
Con estas palabras que resonaban en mí salí a la calle de tierra, y me dejé invadir por el silencio. El poco aire en el lugar vibraba y el sol dañaba la vista.
Y semiciega entraba a la casa, que me producía un sobresalto que ahora comprendo. Me encontraba como un surrealista caminando por los intersticios del inconsciente: idealizaba.
Pero entonces, entré al comedor y me recibió el salivazo de Raquel. Y pensé que éramos sombras que ningún ejército defendería.

Teóricamente, hay algo difícil en esta casa, como si fuera un relato perfecto, o mejor dicho, una experiencia exacta. Y, teóricamente, también esta casa no es incomprensible para mí, no es absurda, no es una cosa vaga, ya que no es algo nebuloso.
Y pasarán años y se sostendrá ahí, como una pequeña pieza de arte, incomprendida.

Intimidad se dice popularmente de una cercanía afectiva, una relación como familiar. También se dice que cuanto mayor es el grado de intimidad, corremos el riesgo de creer, de equivocarnos.
¿Cuánto de eso hay aquí, en la casa de reposo? Por ejemplo, Carlos Vallejo sale del baño y se desplaza por el pasillo lateral y entra a la cocina, y entonces cree que la intimidad volvería loca de amor a su mujer. Se equivoca.
